The Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA) categorizes pre-17th-century Arts and Sciences into several major disciplines focused on historical research, reproduction, and technique. Participants will develop skills in many of these topics to support the historical persona they wish to represent, some become expert resources on a topic.

Fiber Arts & Costuming

  • Historical Costuming: Garment construction, pattern drafting, tailoring, and millinery across various regions and eras.
  • Needlework & Embroidery: Blackwork, couching, goldwork, cross-stitch, and needlepoint.
  • Textile Production: Spinning, weaving (tablet/card weaving, floor loom, warp-weighted loom), knitting, nalbinding, lace-making, and natural dyeing.

Scribal & Visual Arts

  • Calligraphy & Illumination: Period hand scripts (Uncial, Gothic, Chancery), gilding, pigment preparation, and scrollwork design.
  • Fine & Decorative Arts: Fresco, panel painting, glassblowing, stained glass, ceramics, pottery, and mosaic work.
  • Heraldic Sciences: Blazonry (armorial design), roll of arms research, flag/banner creation, and ceremonial protocol.

Culinary & Domestic Arts

  • Period Culinary Arts: Historical recipe interpretation (redaction), feast planning, open-hearth cooking, and butchery.
  • Brewing, Vintning, & Distilling: Ale, mead, wine, cider, cordials, and period fermentation techniques.
  • Preservation & Household: Cheesemaking, pickling, smoking, candlemaking, soapmaking, and perfumery.

Metalwork & Jewelry

  • Armouring: Fabrication of plate armor, chainmail, brigandines, scale armor, and helm raising.
  • Smithing & Metallurgy: Blacksmithing, bladesmithing, casting (lost-wax, sand-casting), and toolmaking.
  • Jewelry & Enameling: Cloisonné, champlevé, wire-weaving, lapidary, and goldsmithing.

Wood, Leather, & Material Crafts

  • Woodworking & Joinery: Furniture making, wood turning (pole lathe), coopering (barrel making), and timber framing.
  • Leatherworking & Shoe Making: Cordwaining (shoemaking), leather carving, tooling, sheath/scabbard making, and saddlery.
  • Bone, Horn, & Stone: Bone carving, hornwork (cups, spoons, combs), stonemasonry, and beadmaking.

Performing Arts & Bardic

  • Music: Vocal performance, historical instruments (lute, recorder, harp, sackbut, drum), and period musical composition.
  • Dance: Historical dance forms including Italian Renaissance balli, English country dances, and French branles.
  • Theater & Poetry: Commedia dell’arte, period playwriting, storytelling, poetry composition, and historical oral traditions.

Sciences & Applied Humanities

  • Research & Literary Sciences: Historical research papers, translation of primary source texts, philology, and period game reconstruction (e.g., chess variants, tafl games).
  • Natural Sciences & Medicine: Herbalism, apothecary arts, astronomy, navigation, cartography, and pre-modern chemistry/alchemy.
  • Agriculture & Husbandry: Falconry, period gardening/horticulture, equestrian sciences, and livestock management.
